Hinkle Family

There are several general "knowns" about this picture of Robert P. Hinkle's Children and their spouses but yet a few unknows and a few puzzles . . . hopefully someone on the Madison County MO forum will be able to help after seeing the picture.

Knowns:
Fact #1: Robert P. Hinkle was married twice:

Marriage #1 was to Elinore "Nellie" or "Ellie" Umphrey or Humphrey. [ My grandfather, W.W. Hinkle prounounced his mother's last name as Umphrey but I'm not sure of the spelling ]. Robert & Ellie had three children before she died at an early age; about 1874. She died in Ripley County; the Doniphan MO area near the Arkansas line (buried there) where all she and Robert's children were born. Their children were Mary (B.C. or E.C.) . . . we suspect the B & E confusion might be from "Beth" for Elizabeth Catherine . . . don't know for sure. Robert's second child was my grandfather William Wiley Hinkle and their third child was Joel. All lived most of their lives in southern Madison County, much of the years, in the Beulah Community near the Wayne County line my grandfather's family William Wiley Hinkle raised most of his 12 children (not including a set of twins who died in infancy) to adulthood in the Twelvemile Community; about 14 miles south of Fredericktown on Highway 67.

Marriage #2 was to Margaret Bennett and there were 10 or 11 children born to them. I now believe that they lost one son, "George," at an early age but haven't been able to prove that for a fact. The other ten children were also born and "raised" in the Beulah Community of Madison County near the Wayne and Iron County lines (Brunot community) between the St. Francis and Black Rivers and near what is now Sam. A. Baker State Park.

Fact #2: Neither Robert or his second wife are in the picture these comments are mostly written to address. We believe they are all either one of Robert's fourteen children, a spouse with possibly a grandson or two also in the picture.

Fact #3: A little on the speculative side but we KNOW there are three spouses in the picture so that would seem to indicate a probability that eleven of the total of fourteen children are in the picture. We "believe" the three children missing are Robert's #1 child, Mary, by his first wife and Nora, eldest daughter by 2nd wife Margaret. There are either a couple of extra boys in this picture OR two boys I didn't expect to be there are in it; a severely crippled child (the first child of his second marriage), Robert A. and, (most likely) a son who I had assumed died at very early, George L.

(See the census of 1900, Twelve Mile TWN, Madison County, for the record showing George L.)

Fact #4: Also a little on the speculative side; based on known dates of the loss of Emma Hinkle's first husband and the known date of death of Robert's youngest son, Cleo, we believe this picture was taken between approximately 1912 - 1916

Fact #4: We will use a simple numbering system for purposes of discussing the known or unknown identities of those in the picture: Left to right, front row: #1 > #9 and L-R, back row, #10 > 15

Person's #1 & #2: identities uncertain.
Person's #3 & #4: Charles H. Hinkle and young wife, Ruth C. Bingham Hinkle
Person's #5 & #6: Almost certainly Monroe Stroup and Matilda "Tildie" Hinkle Stroup

[ Slightly possible alternative that this couple could be Albert White and Nora Hinkle . . . doubtful though. Nora was Robert and Margaret's eldest daughter and believed to not be in this picture.

Person's #7 & #8: Almost certainly Wm. Franklin McAllister and Emma A. Hinkle Deboard McAllister (her first husband a Deboard, had died a few years before this picture was taken). There is a slight possibility I have Emma and Matilda "switched in this picture" but I don't believe so, based on another picture I have identified as Monroe and Matilda.

Person #9: John Marvin Hinkle
Person #10: Albert Cleopas Hinkle (Died at age 20, in 1922)
Person #11: uncertain
Person #12: Frank Daniel Hinkle
Person #13: uncertain; maybe Chester Hinkle
Person #14: Almost certain to be William Wiley Hinkle
Person #15: uncertain; maybe Joel Hinkle

Of course, the most likely "uncertains" are: Lewis H., Chester B., Joel, George L. & Robert A. to make the numbers come out right (Robert had 10 boys and 4 girls). This is a bit of a puzzle as I didn't expect to find either George L. or Robert A. in the picture . . . perhaps a couple of extra friends or grandsons?
